Once Were Leaders

Event Date: 21/02/2017, 06:30 pm

Once Max used to apply makeup, wigs and prosthetic enhancements in order to disguise himself.
Is Australia suffering a leadership deficit? There was a time when politicians could inspire us. But were they really better than the current crop or has our perception benefited from the passage of time? Is it a case of the more things change the more they stay the same?
Max Gillies has been a keen observer of the political combat zone for half a century. His fascination with the ups and downs of political leadership is variously sociological, historical, behavioural, psychological, ideological and parodic.
Once Max used to apply makeup, wigs and prosthetic enhancements in order to disguise himself. He doesn’t have those bits and pieces anymore. But he has accumulated a rich collection of pen portraits. Join Max as he shares his memories of a life spent on the fringes of power mining the archive for his favourite speeches, orations and soliloquies.
Once Were Leaders is an intimate evening with Max Gillies.

Short And Sweet 2017 - Week 5

Event Date: 08/02/2017, 07:30 pm

The biggest little performance festival in the world!
The biggest little theatre festival in the world, Short+Sweet, opened on Jan 11 with the first instalment of this summer’s selection of over 120 tasty, ten-minute bites. Next week will be week 5.
"You will want to go to every week if go, I know I do." Philippa Bird

Short+Sweet has spread the popular 10-minute format in theatre, dance, cabaret & comedy across Australia and the globe
– with festivals now as far afield as Hollywood, India, Malaysia, Dubai and NZ.
But the original theatre festival in its Sydney home is ‘sweet 16’ this year… and plans to celebrate in style!

New Festival director Wayne Tunks is actually a S+S ‘old hand’, having written, directed and acted in the fest since 2003.
The prolific playwright has some innovations planned for this year including 'Short+Sweet Queer' and a ‘Festival Director’s Choice’.

“I am looking for challenging plays, ones that stand out not just for a punch line but for a cohesive team, a strong script and bloody good performances.”

Each new week's program opens on successive Wednesdays and runs nightly through Sunday, always at 7.30pm.

Plus the separate 'Wildcards' program Sat and Sun at 4pm.

The heats for both programs run for 8 weeks, followed by finals in March.

It’s circus as performance art and beards across the board
It’s circus as performance art and beards across the board when the Québécois Cirque Alfonse brings BARBU to the Sydney Opera House this February.

Following the success of Timber! (Sydney Festival 2015) and BARBU (Adelaide Fringe 2016), these big-bellied carnies from Canada’s francophone heartland make their Opera House debut - and stray dangerously close to the edge.

BARBU flings the audience into a fairground time warp of kooky curiosities and feats of spellbinding strength and skill, all inspired by Montreal’s burgeoning circus scene at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

This is contemporary circus minus political correctness and replete with witty repartee, golf clubs, nails, beer-kegs, hula-hoops, roller skates and a liberal dash of nudity.

An electro trad band – electronic music fused with traditional Quebec folk composed by André Gagné and David Simard – transform this heady mix into an exuberant circus rave set to compelling projected visuals by Frédéric Barrette (Cirque du Soleil: Solstrom).

Founded in 2005 by Antoine Carabinier-Lépine and his 68-year-old father Alain Carabinier, and managed by Antoine’s mother Louise Lépine, Cirque Alfonse is a dynamic young family of performers that blends circus and performance art with traditional Quebec folklore.

Hailing from Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, Cirque Alfonse’s founding members have worked with some of the most renowned “nouveau cirque” companies around the world. The company comprises acrobats who graduated from the École nationale de cirque de Montréal, as well as a professional dancer, an ex-skiing champion and three talented and versatile musicians.
