Event Date: 02/03/2017, 07:00 pm

JASPER JONES is adapted from the award-winning iconic Australian novel by Craig Silvey
JASPER JONES is directed by Rachel Perkins (Bran Nue Dae, Radiance, One Night the Moon) and produced by Vincent Sheehan (Animal Kingdom, The Hunter) and David Jowsey (Mystery Road, Goldstone).

The trailer includes a beautifully crafted new song from Dustin Tebbutt - "Atlas in Your Eyes”, which will feature in the film and also be released alongside JASPER JONES early next year.

The film features a stellar cast including Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense, Little Miss Sunshine, Muriel’s Wedding), Hugo Weaving (The Matrix, The Dressmaker, The Hobbit), Levi Miller (Pan, upcoming Red Dog: True Blue), Angourie Rice (These Final Hours, The Nice Guys), Dan Wyllie (Offspring, Muriel’s Wedding), Matt Nable (Riddick, Son of a Gun) and Aaron McGrath (GLITCH), JASPER JONES is the story of Charlie Bucktin, a bookish boy of 14 living in a small town in Western Australia.

In the dead of night during the scorching summer of 1969, Charlie is startled when he is woken by local mixed-race outcast Jasper Jones outside his window. Jasper leads him deep into the forest and shows him something that will change his life forever, setting them both on a dangerous journey to solve a mystery that will consume the entire community.

In an isolated town where secrecy, gossip and tragedy overwhelm the landscape, Charlie faces family breakdown, finds his first love, and discovers what it means to be truly courageous.

JASPER JONES will be released in cinemas on 2 March 2017.

Big Crow Ticket Giveaway

Event Date: 23/02/2017, 07:30 pm

Big Crow - An original australian play by Mark Langham, produced by Brave New Word theatre company
Big Crow by Mark Langham is based, loosely, on a true story. In the early 1930’s two young Londoners ground down by poverty, Tommy and Albie, were offered a spur of the moment trip to Australia. No sooner had they landed than they were taken to work as virtual slaves on a huge station, completely at the mercy of the station owner Roy, a man who’s life has been a stream of disappointments.
Tommy is a weasel; swift, cunning and potentially fatal. Albie could crush you with his kindness, but only if Tommy told him to… and their desperation has led them to a decision – they’re going to kill Roy. Roy’s wife and daughter disturb the murder but are far more interested in watching than saving him. The murder is put on hold and a dialogue begins.

International Short Film Festival

Event Date: 20/02/2017, 07:00 pm

Short+Sweet Film opens for its first ever – international – fest from next Mon
The latest version of Australia’s own runaway international hit performing arts franchise has chosen almost 50 short films from around Australia and the world to screen over four Mondays before the best are chosen for the Gala Final at Newtown’s Dendy Cinema on Sunday 19 March.

And with its recently announced partnership with the Stella Adler acting Academy in Los Angeles,
festival directors Ali Crew and Angela Blake predict great outcomes for local film-makers.

“Over the next year we’ll present unique S+S Film Festivals in Australia, India, SE Asia and the Middle East with the winning films from each festival to be presented in an International Gala Final in Hollywood” Blake said.

The opening week’s heat (Monday 13 February at 7pm) features 12 short films (all under ten minutes
as the rules of Short+Sweet always dictate) with more than half locally produced.
Other countries represented include Mexico, Belgium, the USA and Iran.

NOTE: We are giving away a double pass to the second week of the festival.

Once Were Leaders

Event Date: 21/02/2017, 06:30 pm

Once Max used to apply makeup, wigs and prosthetic enhancements in order to disguise himself.
Is Australia suffering a leadership deficit? There was a time when politicians could inspire us. But were they really better than the current crop or has our perception benefited from the passage of time? Is it a case of the more things change the more they stay the same?
Max Gillies has been a keen observer of the political combat zone for half a century. His fascination with the ups and downs of political leadership is variously sociological, historical, behavioural, psychological, ideological and parodic.
Once Max used to apply makeup, wigs and prosthetic enhancements in order to disguise himself. He doesn’t have those bits and pieces anymore. But he has accumulated a rich collection of pen portraits. Join Max as he shares his memories of a life spent on the fringes of power mining the archive for his favourite speeches, orations and soliloquies.
Once Were Leaders is an intimate evening with Max Gillies.

Short And Sweet 2017 - Week 5

Event Date: 08/02/2017, 07:30 pm

The biggest little performance festival in the world!
The biggest little theatre festival in the world, Short+Sweet, opened on Jan 11 with the first instalment of this summer’s selection of over 120 tasty, ten-minute bites. Next week will be week 5.
"You will want to go to every week if go, I know I do." Philippa Bird

Short+Sweet has spread the popular 10-minute format in theatre, dance, cabaret & comedy across Australia and the globe
– with festivals now as far afield as Hollywood, India, Malaysia, Dubai and NZ.
But the original theatre festival in its Sydney home is ‘sweet 16’ this year… and plans to celebrate in style!

New Festival director Wayne Tunks is actually a S+S ‘old hand’, having written, directed and acted in the fest since 2003.
The prolific playwright has some innovations planned for this year including 'Short+Sweet Queer' and a ‘Festival Director’s Choice’.

“I am looking for challenging plays, ones that stand out not just for a punch line but for a cohesive team, a strong script and bloody good performances.”

Each new week's program opens on successive Wednesdays and runs nightly through Sunday, always at 7.30pm.

Plus the separate 'Wildcards' program Sat and Sun at 4pm.

The heats for both programs run for 8 weeks, followed by finals in March.

It’s circus as performance art and beards across the board
It’s circus as performance art and beards across the board when the Québécois Cirque Alfonse brings BARBU to the Sydney Opera House this February.

Following the success of Timber! (Sydney Festival 2015) and BARBU (Adelaide Fringe 2016), these big-bellied carnies from Canada’s francophone heartland make their Opera House debut - and stray dangerously close to the edge.

BARBU flings the audience into a fairground time warp of kooky curiosities and feats of spellbinding strength and skill, all inspired by Montreal’s burgeoning circus scene at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

This is contemporary circus minus political correctness and replete with witty repartee, golf clubs, nails, beer-kegs, hula-hoops, roller skates and a liberal dash of nudity.

An electro trad band – electronic music fused with traditional Quebec folk composed by André Gagné and David Simard – transform this heady mix into an exuberant circus rave set to compelling projected visuals by Frédéric Barrette (Cirque du Soleil: Solstrom).

Founded in 2005 by Antoine Carabinier-Lépine and his 68-year-old father Alain Carabinier, and managed by Antoine’s mother Louise Lépine, Cirque Alfonse is a dynamic young family of performers that blends circus and performance art with traditional Quebec folklore.

Hailing from Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez, Cirque Alfonse’s founding members have worked with some of the most renowned “nouveau cirque” companies around the world. The company comprises acrobats who graduated from the École nationale de cirque de Montréal, as well as a professional dancer, an ex-skiing champion and three talented and versatile musicians.

May the best beard win!
