TALKING TO TERRORISTS By Robin Soans

Event Date: 23/05/2017, 07:30 pm

Australian Premiere of Robin Soans' TALKING TO TERRORISTS
TALKING TO TERRORISTS
By Robin Soans
By arrangement with The Agency (London) Ltd.

Australian Premiere Season.
Talking to Terrorists is a play commissioned by the Royal Court and Out of Joint in 2005. The writer Robin Soans, director Max Stafford – Clark, and actors interviewed people from around the world who have been affected by or involved in terrorism. They wanted to know what makes ordinary people do extreme things, often at a shockingly young age. The people they met, several of whom have asked not to be named, spoke candidly and often bravely.
Peacemakers, journalists and hostages. Significant figures from recent history. And those who have crossed the line. Their stories take us from Africa, Israel, Turkey, Iraq and Ireland to the heart of the British Establishment.
‘One story we heard seemed particularly significant. A relief- worker told us of arriving at a large village which had been completely destroyed. The people there were angry not because they had nothing to eat and nowhere to live but because non-one had listened to their story of what had happened. “A huge part of what we call terrorism arises from non- one listening,” she said.’ Robin Soans & Max Stafford- Clarke.
Cast includes, Mathew Costin, David D’Silva, Zuzi Fort, Kira Fort, Tiffany Joy, Alyson Standen, Kyle Stewart, Joseph JU Taylor.

Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra...

Event Date: 22/05/2017, 07:30 pm

Conducted by iconic Artistic Director Richard Gill AO, starring mezzo-soprano Fiona Campbell
The Australian Romantic & Classical Orchestra follows up its stunning March 2017 season opener with a gorgeous program of Romantic music, performed for the first time ever in Australia on authentic period instruments, in Historically Informed Performance (HIP) style.

Conducted by iconic Artistic Director Richard Gill AO and starring mesmirising mezzo-soprano Fiona Campbell, the May 20 (Sydney) and 22 (Melbourne) concerts feature works by Rossini (including overtures and the most extraordinary arias from his operas) and Schubert (Overture and the ‘Unfinished’ Symphony).
Guest concertmaster is outstanding violinist and period performance doyen, Berlin-based Jakob Lehmann.

Richard Gill promises an exhilarating experience with a unique sound.
“You’ve never heard the Romantics played like this before; and once you have, you’ll be hooked!” he said.

The intrigue and daring of Rossini’s operas, written early in the 19th century, brings unbridled passion to the concert stage with heroic and comedic characters, setting lovers’ (and music lovers’!) hearts racing with engaging orchestral energy and shimmering colours.
Schubert’s portrayal of unrequited love is unmistakable in his Overture in C minor and his famous ’Unfinished’ Symphony, whose depth and breadth of passion transports us into the unknown.

ARCO Artistic Director, Richard Gill AO, is a genuine living legend of the Australian performance and music education world and, true to its vision to ‘inspire, educate and enlighten’ audiences, ARCO also continues to bring inspiring workshops to schools all around Australia.

Fiona Campbell is one of Australia’s most versatile and beloved classical singers - a producer and guest ABC presenter, accomplished international performer, recitalist and recording artist.
Winner of the national Limelight Award for Best Solo Performance 2011, the ABC Young Performer of the Year Award and the ASC Opera Awards, Fiona has been widely acclaimed for her powerful performances.

TALES FROM VIENNA - The Streeton Trio

Event Date: 20/05/2017, 03:00 pm

The Streeton Trio, one Australia’s finest classical music ensembles.
The Streeton Trio, one Australia’s finest classical music ensembles, comes to the Independent Theatre, North Sydney on Saturday afternoon 20 May with a Viennese treat as sweet as any sacher torte!
The internationally acclaimed trio featuring Emma Jardine (violin), Benjamin Kopp (piano) & Meta Weiss (cello) presents masterworks by Europe’s leading composers around the time of the 1814 Vienna Congress: Schubert, Rossini and Beethoven.

The concert will be introduced by special guest, Hon Dr Barry Jones AC - writer, broadcaster, popular former government minister – and music lover!

Named after the Australian Impressionist painter, Sir Arthur Streeton and described by Musica Viva as
“Australia’s most internationally successful piano trio”, the Streeton Trio was formed in 2008, in Geneva, Switzerland, by three young Australian musicians.

Since they, they have performed throughout the world, garnered many awards and won countless accolades.
They also have an impressive recording history and feature regularly on classical music radio.

This concert’s program explores the complex musical situation in Vienna, the capital of European music at the beginning of the 1800s. These two decades of great cultural ferment saw the Vienna Congress (1814/1815) as the turning point between the ideals of the Enlightenment and those of the Restoration. There was a radical change in the social role of music, which was no longer used as an instrument of awareness and knowledge, but instead became a narcotic, useful to disguise the harsh reality of post-Napoleonic and post-Enlightenment society. These historical circumstances deeply characterized the work of the most important composers of the time: Beethoven, Schubert and Rossini all of whom gravitated around Vienna influencing one another.
