ELITE ARTISTS UNITE FOR SCHUBERT MASTERPIECE
Flinders Quartet, Melbourne’s premier string quartet, makes its debut appearance at North Sydney’s
spectacular Independent Theatre this June 18 - with special guest cellist, Timo-Veikko Valve –
in a mouth-watering program of chamber pieces for strings by Schubert, Boccherini and Sculthorpe.
Australia’s most loved composer, Peter Sculthorpe said of his compositions that he viewed his whole output as one slowly emerging work.
The same can certainly be said of Luigi Boccherini and Franz Schubert.
Each of these works epitomises the canon of these three masters of chamber music.

Flinders Quartet - Shane Chen (violin), Nicholas Waters (violin), Helen Ireland (viola) and Zoe Knighton (cello)
- is instantly recognisable as one of Australia’s most loved chamber music ensembles.
A quartet for the twenty-first century, Flinders continues its second decade with acknowledged musical skill and maturity.
Their dynamic and stirring performances of a full spectrum of repertoire have audiences and critics articulating their esteem,
and the quartet is now a highly respected force in Australian chamber music.
It regularly commissions and premieres works by Australian composers such Stuart Greenbaum, Elena Kats-Chernin, Katy Abbott,
Ross Edwards, Richard Mills, Paul Dean, Paul Grabowsky, Andrew Ford, Ian Munro and Tom Henry
with Calvin Bowman and Iain Grandage commissions and arrangements slated for this year.

SPORT FOR JOVE’s thrilling NSW-wide event reaches its thrilling climax on Sunday 18 June the State Final at the Seymour Centre from 6pm.

The popular carnival encourages high school students to get up and get active,
organising their own school Shakespeare carnival where they create their own theatrical worlds.
They design their own sets and costumes, compose music, choreograph dances and act scenes
that are inspired by and celebrate the work of William Shakespeare.

Based on the Globe Centre Australia Shakespeare Festival that ran for 20 years starting in the 1990s – and relaunched in 2016 - the Shakespeare Carnival provides a fantastic early opportunity for students to explore, create and be inspired by the art of theatre making.

Regional finals were held in May in Sydney South, Sydney Central, Sydney North, Albury, Wollongong, Armidale & Newcastle.

Cyrano De Bergerac

Event Date: 15/06/2017, 07:30 pm

A return of Sport For Jove's highly acclaimed production.
Sport For Jove Theatre Company is pleased to announce that its next production is an exciting return season for the many thousands who have heard or read about but haven’t yet seen their acclaimed production of Cyrano de Bergerac; winner of the 2013 Sydney Theatre Award for the Best Independent Production, Director and Actor. For this return season, Damien Ryan will be performing in the title role of Cyrano de Bergerac.

Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the world’s most original and finely crafted romantic comedies; the tale of the beautiful Roxane and the man who would love her, but for his outrageous nose – the play that brought the word ‘panache’ into the English language! Cyrano is a complete theatrical masterpiece.

Cyrano’s ideas and concerns are simply and profoundly human – what does individualism mean and how do we remain faithful to what we believe in? What is love and how do we get past its clichés and false ideals? How does self-esteem define us all our lives? What is beauty? What drives male aggression? What is courage? And for Rostand, it was a passionate condemnation and plea for a France that he felt was losing its soul, its romance and its creativity to return to a more enlightened, brave and individual sense of its identity – its panache.

Following the huge touring success of Antigone and Of Mice of Men, Cyrano de Bergerac will be touring to the Canberra Theatre Centre and Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in addition to its 2 week run on the big York Theatre stage at the Seymour Centre. Damien Ryan’s new adaptation of the play won enormous acclaim in 2013 and Sport For Jove are thrilled to bring it back for a new Australian audience in 2017.

The Balmain Sinfonia

Event Date: 10/06/2017, 05:00 pm

BORODIN, DVORAK & MOZART WITH PASSIONATE VIOLINIST
The Balmain Sinfonia continues its 2017 season – and celebrates its 100 th performance - with a wonderful concert of Borodin, Mozart and Dvorak, showcasing Australian violinist Tinel Dragoi and with its recently honoured artistic director Gary Stavrou OAM again holding the baton.

The latest in the popular series of Saturday afternoon concerts takes place on 10 June 5pm, at the Italian Forum auditorium in Leichhardt. And there will be a free glass of ‘bubbly’ for all in celebration of the Sinfonia
reaching its ‘ton’!

Borodin’s vivid tone poem In the Steppes of Central Asia begins with a peaceful Russian song then paints a
scene with the approach of horses and camels and the bizarre and melancholy notes of an oriental melody.

“A caravan approaches, escorted by Russian soldiers, and continues safely on its way through the immense
desert. It disappears slowly. The notes of the Russian and Asiatic melodies join in a common harmony which

dies away as the caravan disappears into the distance.” In his Violin Concerto No.5, Mozart’s musical
invention takes on an aspect of caprice that we rarely encounter in his other major instrumental works.

Melodies pour abundantly from his pen with the flow of music is often interrupted for fascinating but
inexplicable digressions. Dvorak broke new ground with the Symphony No. 8, with music steeped in the
flavour and atmosphere of the Czech countryside and folk tunes. Dvorak includes sounds from nature,
particularly hunting horn calls, birdsong and dramatic fanfares that suggest non-musical images.

Borodin : In the Steppes of Central Asia | Borodin : Prince Igor Overture
Mozart : Violin Concerto No. 5 | Dvorak : Symphony No. 8
