THE ARAB FILM FESTIVAL - Melbourne

Event Date: 26/08/2017, 06:30 pm

The 14th annual Arab Film Festival Australia (AFFA)
The 14th annual Arab Film Festival Australia (AFFA) returns this August in 2017 sharing the stories and cultures of the Arab world with an impressive program of six features and five short films.

AFFA will screen films from Lebanon, Egypt, Algeria, Jordan, Palestine, Iraq, Tunisia and Australia, and kicks off in Sydney (17–20 August), moving through Melbourne (25-27 August), Canberra (01–02 September) before concluding in Perth (09 September).

The 2017 Arab Film Festival program serves as an important platform for films that share unique and often unheard or untold stories about the experiences of Arab people today. This year the Festival shines a light on the lives of generations of Arab women and how they navigate and overcome modern day prejudice. AFFA also features stories that provide audiences with an in depth look at the lives of young men and how they battle with expectations of masculinity in today’s society. From documentaries to classic love stories, the program explores the politics of identity and finding one’s place in a world plagued by turmoil

“I am very excited that this year’s films have such a strong representation of women and complex stories about the lives of men as they challenge societies expectations of them” says Co-Festival Director, Fadia Abboud. “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to feature new female directors through the incredible films we have selected in this year’s Festival.”

Visit their website for the program of films. www.arabfilmfestival.com.au

Romantic Winter Treat

Event Date: 20/08/2017, 03:30 pm

Sydney Schubert Society presents SCHUBERT’S WINTERREISE (D911)
Completed in the autumn of 1827, Schubert’s moving lieder cycle left the composer himself in a state of exhaustion. According to contemporary reports, Schubert had been gravely ill for a long time.
“He had experienced much melancholy…. and winter had arrived for him.”
Contemplating the unresolved fate of a wanderer who is nowhere at home and has no prospect of arrival or redemption, Schubert presents us with a beautiful musico-lyrical anatomy of melancholy.
His Winterreise is a profoundly personal statement, a timeless reflection of human fate within a rootless existence and one of the greatest examples of romantic sensibility in music. It is no exaggeration to say that “Gute Nacht”, the opening song, is emblematic of the entire cycle.
The opening phrase, ‘A stranger I came, a stranger I depart’ sets the scene for the extraordinary journey which is to follow.

Australian baritone Barry Ryan OAM has performed in concert throughout Europe, Australia and Asia.
His many awards include the Shell Aria, the New York Metropolitan Auditions, the Marten Bequest,
the Vienna State Opera Award and the Green Room Award. He has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Norwegian Symphony Orchestra, the Shinsei Nihon Symphony Orchestra Tokyo and all the major Symphony Orchestras in Australasia. Barry has performed under the batons of some of the world’s leading conductors, including, Riccardo Muti, Zubin Metha, Sir Charles Mackerras, Simone Young, Richard Bonynge, Carlo Felice Cillario and Richard Hickox.

Jeanell Carrigan studied at the Sydney and Queensland Conservatories and then in Europe with Nancy Salas, Leah Horwitz, Pamela Page, Alfons Kontarsky and Karl Engel and is currently Associate Professor at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Jeanell has performed as a soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and throughout Australia, and has recorded for the Bavarian Radio Corporation and ABC.

Holding The Man

HEART-WRENCHING, FUNNY, HONEST AUSSIE PLAY FOR NEW SYDNEY PRODUCTION
Hot on the heels of its acclaimed productions of Cosi, Away, The Last Five Years and the Vagina Monologues, Lane Cove Theatre Company presents the famous, powerful Australian story of love, loss and the AIDS pandemic: HOLDING THE MAN.

Based on Timothy Conigrave’s celebrated memoir of the same name, Tommy Murphy’s award-winning play is a breathtakingly honest, achingly funny and completely heart-wrenching account of a 15-year relationship that weathered disapproval, separation, temptation and, ultimately, death. It is a story - and a celebration - that speaks across generations, sexual preference and cultures.

The course of true love rarely runs smooth, but it is a white-water adventure if you are secretly gay in an all-boys school in 1970’s Melbourne… with a crush on the captain of the football team. Against all odds, Tim and John develop a relationship that for fifteen years, survives everything life throws at them-the temptations, the separations, the discriminations, the jealousies and the losses — until the only problem that love can’t solve turns up to tear them apart.

Holding the Man paints a raw, gritty and intimate picture that faithfully captures Timothy Conigrave’s book, but also succeeds in transforming it into a unique theatrical experience that is wholly his own.

“Compelling, wrenching … unflinching, devastating, moving and funny” - Sydney Morning Herald

“Tommy Murphy is a bewitching playwright of startling originality” - Cate Blanchett & Andrew Upton

Directed by Kathryn Thomas, the cast features Brent Dolahenty and Wayne Buckley with Isaac Downey, Hannah Lehmann, Bec Leedham and Trent Gardiner.

The play depicts the hardship of an extremely important time period within queer society, says Thomas.

“I am a big believer in theatre being a motivator for social change and Holding the Man does that in so many aspects. The story of Tim and John’s relationship is a landmark in Australian social history.”
