Operantics Presents 'La Finta Giardiniera'

Event Date: 06/10/2017, 07:30 pm

Mozart's hilarious comedy of errors and mistaken identity opens at the Independent Theatre
La Finta Giardiniera, ‘the disguised gardener’, is the Countess Onesti, Violante, the heroine of the opera. She has been stabbed in a fit of jealous rage by her lover, the Count Belfiore, before the opera begins and is left for dead. Fortunately she recovers and, calling herself Sandrina, goes into hiding at the house of the local Mayor. The Mayor immediately falls in love with her, which annoys his servant Serpetta, who is in love with him herself.

Serpetta is in turn loved by Sandrina’s servant, Nardo (also pretending to be a gardener) and the plot starts to get rather complicated. It’s not helped by the sudden arrival of the Mayor’s niece, Arminda, who has dumped her lover, Ramiro, in order to marry a nobleman her uncle has found for her. Ramiro won’t give up and follows Arminda to her uncle’s house, but he hasn’t got a chance, especially when her fiancé arrives. He is rich, handsome, and called – Belfiore.

Operantics is an independent opera company that aims to make opera more accessible (and affordable) while providing a platform for talented local artists. Come see the opera stars of tomorrow at the beautiful Independent Theatre!

The Pirates Of Penzance

Event Date: 06/10/2017, 08:00 pm

Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney are presenting a swashbuckling and hilarious production.
Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Sydney are presenting a swashbuckling and hilarious production of The Pirates of Penzance!

On an idyllic beach in Cornwall, England, we meet Frederic: a young, strapping, handsome, not over-intelligent pirate who's 21 today.

He was inadvertently apprenticed to a pirate at the age of 8 because his governess, Ruth, was hard of hearing. Now that he's come of age, Frederic’s apprenticeship is now completed, so where does he go from here?

Having been at sea for so long, our hero can’t remember what a young woman looks like.

Suddenly, along comes a bevy of beautiful maidens out for a picnic and a paddle. Crisis for Fred!

By chance, these girls’ foster-father is a Major-General who missed his vocation as a rapper but is now making up for lost time.

So what does he do to save the day?

You won’t believe what comes next. If you love confusion, contradiction, con trickery, constabulary, and consummate melodies, then The Pirates of Penzance will explain who put the ‘corn’ in ‘Cornwall’ - and send you out of the theatre on a consupercalifragilisticexpialidocious high!

Hear all your favourite songs, including ‘Poor Wand’ring One’, ‘I am the very model of the Major-General' and 'A Policeman's lot is not a happy one'.

With Stage Director Victoria Watson, Musical Director Rod Mounjed and Choreographer Sarah Pearce at the helm, this is one production not to be missed!
