Dream Girls

Event Date: 08/09/2017, 08:00 pm

A journey from Pop to Rock & Roll to Rhythm & Blues to Disco… and beyond!
DREAMGIRLS is about a time in American musical history when rhythm and blues blended with other styles of popular music creating a whole new American sound.

Based on the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles and others, this hit Broadway musical tells the story of a young female singing trio that crosses over to the pop charts in the 1960s to become music superstars.
But as the group’s fame and fortune skyrockets, they soon realise that life on top is rocky!

Act One is set in the fabulous sixties — a time when we were still screaming at Elvis and bopping to the Beatles
but were dancing to the new beat of girl and boy groups like The Supremes, The Marvelettes, The Temptations and The Shirelles. Act Two depicts the creation and the arrival of disco.

The music of DREAMGIRLS charts the musical contribution to America of a period whose importance we are only now — decades later — beginning to fully understand.

DREAMGIRLS is not just about electrifying singing and the dancing. The show also reveals the behind-the-scenes reality of the entertainment industry — the bitter rivalries and the heartbreak as well as the hard-edged business part of showbusiness that made possible this cultural phenomenon.
This production is by the Rockdale Musical Society.

What I'll Never Say

Event Date: 06/09/2017, 07:00 pm

Australian politics goes under the looking glass at Sydney Fringe Festival
Australian politics goes under the looking glass at Sydney Fringe Festival from 6 to 9 September in new play What I’ll Never Say written and performed by senior lobbyist at one of the largest multi-national pharmaceutical companies in the world.

Stuart Graham has spent the last 10 years consulting with almost every member of senior Parliament, first as a commercial lawyer, then a political staffer in the early days of the Carr Labor Government in NSW, and now as a Canberra lobbyist.

“What I’ll Never Say is based on working daily with the very people that are trying to make politics function,” says Englund.

“Our politics is deep in a rough patch and it can be incredibly frustrating, but it isn’t broken. Almost all of our politicians are women and men with the best of intentions. They aren’t devils and they aren’t saints, they’re just human. When we’re under pressure it isn’t the time to give up on politics; if we want something different, it’s time to get involved,” said Englund.

What I’ll Never Say brings politics to the stage, wrestling with the dreams we have, the choices we make and all that follows: the struggles of pre-selection, the larger world of the election, Parliament, life as a junior minister, the victories and crushing betrayals that follow, and, at the heart of it all, the idea of why we started on the path of politics in the first place.

The Klezmatics, David Krakauer With Ancestral...

Event Date: 31/08/2017, 07:00 pm

This extraordinary double act is a one-of-a-kind occasion, not to be missed!
The Klezmatics erupted out of New York City’s East Village in 1986 and revitalized klezmer for the new century.
The sometimes frenzied, sometimes reflective - always danceable - music is steeped in Eastern European Jewish tradition and spirituality.
In The Klezmatics’ hands, it incorporates contemporary themes while blending the eclectic musical influences of
Arab, African, Latin and Balkan rhythms, jazz and punk.

They have collaborated with numerous musical luminaries including folk hero Arlo Guthrie, classical legend Itzhak Perlman, Israeli pop icons Chava Albertstein and Ehud Banay, beat poet Allen Ginsberg, The Master Musicians of Jajouka, the Ben Folds Five and ‘kosher gospel’ singer Joshua Nelson.
They’ve produced nine albums of provocative and ecstatic music, forever redefining and transcending traditional labels.

For over two decades, internationally celebrated clarinetist David Krakauer has been reinventing and remixing the Jewish music of his ancestry with the sensibility of a contemporary musician strongly informed by funk, jazz and hip-hop.

Starting with The Klezmatics, then recording on John Zorn’s Radical Jewish Culture imprint, Krakauer has forged an incomparable musical path that’s included landmark collaborations with funk legend Fred Wesley,
the Kronos Quartet, beat-wizard So called, leading symphony orchestras, rappers, celebrated composers and musicians of all kinds.
Krakauer’s band Ancestral Groove represents the next step in this unique musical evolution.

Comedy Festival Encore: Matt Stewart And Nick...

Event Date: 26/08/2017, 07:30 pm

MATT STEWART “PRETTY DRY” + NICK CAPPER “CHROME DOGGIE”
RAW Comedy winner Matt Stewart’s debut solo show Pretty Dry, and NSW comedian Nick Capper’s weird and wonderful Chrome Doggie will hit Sydney’s Giant Dwarf Saturday 26 August.

Stewart’s Pretty Dry enjoyed a fantastic sold-out run at this year’s MICF, with a show described as “the culmination of a 7-year journey writing, directing, and performing comedy. …Stewart's got disgustingly good timing and a mighty, warm on-stage presence. One of those rare shows that'll suck you in from the opening line and spit you back out 50 minutes later utterly breathless.”

Nick Capper’s show Chrome Doggie took audiences on an altogether different ride. The comedian’s comedian, Capper has earned praise from comedy heavy weights including Mark from Aunty Donna "Nick Capper is the most gut-funny, daringly dark and hysterically absurd comic on the scene right now. He'll make you laugh in ways you didn't even think were possible."

Anne Edmonds says: "Nick Capper is the real deal. He has funny bones and a wild imagination that spins amazing stories. He has something unique and I always sit up and take notice when he's performing. Get on board now!"

So. Get on board for this once-off-event and book your tickets now!
