THE CRIPPLE OF INISHMAAN

4-26 JUNE AT THE PAVILION THEATRE, Castle Hill
An astonishing piece of theatre comes to Sydney’s Pavilion Theatre in June when Castle Hill Players present The Cripple of Inishmaan.

From the award-winning, critically acclaimed British writer, Martin McDonagh (The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri)
comes a dark comedy, set on a small island off the west coast of Ireland.

It’s 1934 in the small Aran Islands community of Inishmaan when Billy, a crippled teenager, schemes to attain a role in a film.
Tongues are set a-wagging when word spreads around Inishmaan that a Hollywood director is coming to the neighbouring island of Inishmore.
Billy is determined to be cast, if only to break away from the tedium of his daily existence.

Woodburn Creatives, Redfern
An exhilarating new physical theatre company debuts with a work both evocative and compelling.

INTACT is a tangibly intense performance of few words, driven by themes of inward exploration and re-invention.
A dream-like and surreal performance piece, INTACT is grounded in a compelling reflection on the limitations of body and mind.
And it is the thrilling debut work for Fuser Production.
Following a soldier upon his return from war, INTACT asks us to interrogate how we reinvent ourselves in an attempt to adapt to extreme challenges.
Unable to relate to whom one once was, and without a compass to direct one towards any sense of purpose,
both the protagonist and the audience are encouraged to sit in what ‘stuck’ feels like
and confront the hero’s transformation in a revealing experience of identity.

INTACT is performed by Steve Lu and Olivia Hardley who co-devised the work with the creative team of
French-born company founder Cecile Payet, Emily Yali and Sabrina Muszynski.
Set design by Sam Wylie, lighting by Travis Kecek and video production by Kalani Gacon of Video Friendly Dog Films.

Short and Sweet Sydney 2020 Hindsight Gala
The “biggest little theatre festival in the world” - celebrating its 20th season! - kicks off on Sunday 16 May with two performances of the special Hindsight 2020 Gala – the final we desperately missed and now get to see – featuring the best of last year’s Covid-curtailed fest.
There will be one judges’ performance at 2pm, with the Awards* Gala at 6pm – all at the hit international festival’s Sydney home, the newly renovated Tom Mann Auditorium in Surry Hills.

Ten ten-minute plays – from the comic and gripping – that won their respective heats last year, open this year’s bumper festival and there’s a no shortage of drama… and laughs!

2019 was a huge year for Daniel. He made his second appearance on the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala, featured in the hit sketch series 'Kinne Tonight' and he toured his stand-up hour 'Piece of Piss' all over Australia as well as to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Daniel Connell could easily be described as the ideal Aussie comedian; affable, lovable and hilarious. His observational, dry, often unanticipated comedy has seen him take to stages all over the country.?

Lane Cove Theatre Company follows up its sell-out 2021 season premiere musical hit Jekyll & Hyde,
with one of the world’s most loved stories of women’s friendship, love and loss: Steel Magnolias.
A beautiful, bittersweet comedy set in America’s deep south, the play
– adapted for an Oscar-winning movie starring Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, Shirley Maclaine, Daryl Hannah and Olympia Dukakis -
chronicles the lives and friendships of six women in Chinquapin, Louisiana.

Supporting each other through triumphs and tragedies, they congregate at Truvy’s Beauty Spot, to ponder the mysteries of life and death, husbands and children. Despite their differences, beautiful and impulsive Shelby, her strong-willed mother M’Lynn, beauty parlour owner Truvy,
elegant widow Clairee, sharp-tongued Ouiser and mousy newcomer Annelle, enjoy a friendship that span the boundaries of age and status.
Sharing each other’s strength and loyalty, these six remarkable women survive the cycles of life, birth and death to emerge stronger, closer and still laughing!

Truvy’s salon is the go-to place for a beauty fix with a hearty side of gossip. Along with her over-eager assistant Annelle,
Truvy pampers her small-town clients with hairdos, manicures & all kinds of unsolicited advice. Anybody who’s anybody is a regular.
Through witty banter and wisecracks, this hodgepodge group of women form friendships as strong as steel, which they are forced to lean on when tragedy strikes.

Based on a true story, playwright Robert Harling wrote the play in only 10 days, based on the story of his own sister’s death.
Director Trent Gardiner says the play shows us characters who change as life provides its ups and downs.
“We see things that we all experience as our own lives grow and change: joy, hope, grief, discovery.
And most of all: the importance of love and friendship in good times and bad.”
