Chatswood Musical Society brings FAME to life on the northside
One of the great Broadway musicals ever hits the north shore in October when Chatswood Musical Society brings '80s blockbuster FAME to life on the northside.

With a cast choc-full of local talent, the earthy and energised hit is based on the Academy-award-winning movie and includes the thrilling title song that won an Oscar for Irene Cara.

Set in the NYC High School of Performing Arts where talent is gold, the harsh truth is that only blood, sweat and tears can realise young dreams of stardom. Long before Glee or reality TV, there was FAME. Don't miss it!

With all the Clown’s hilarious antics, can the two ever become friends?

George Ellis

George Ellis is an exciting musician who is rapidly emerging as one of today’s most talented Australian conductors. His extensive academic training in conducting, composition and arranging, in Australia and overseas, and a wide range of experience has enabled Ellis to develop the unique talent essential for sensitively traversing a broad range of musical genres. One of George Ellis’s first conducting jobs was presenting a children’s concert with the Sydney Youth Orchestra in Orange, NSW. From there he worked as assistant conductor to Simone Young at Opera Australia. He then landed the job of reviving and developing the Babies Proms series. This led to work across Australia and overseas. Ellis cites the most inspiring experience of his career was conducting the Sydney Symphony at the Sydney Olympics opening ceremony.

George Washingmachine

George has had a vast and varied career in the entertainment business, as a musician, actor and comedian. He is a multi-instrumentalist – proficient on double bass, guitar or anything with strings. George has written everything from rock and roll nursery rhymes for Mr Squiggle to music for the Bell Shakespeare Company. George formed rhythm & blues band, The Dead Wringers and in 1984 he played jazz fiddle with The Conway Brothers Hiccup Orchestra and performed with Graham Bond in the stage show “Captain Bloody”.

Equus

Event Date: 26/09/2013, 06:30 pm

Equus is a two act play by British playwright Sir Peter Shaffer.
The British play Equus, by Sir Peter Shaffer was first produced at the National Theatre in London on July 26 1973. 40 years later the impact the play has on audiences is still as strong as it was when first produced. The universality of some of the plays themes: crime, religion, the media, coming of age and identity, drive the play through a narrative that is mysterious, captivating, unnerving and breathtaking. A narrative that audiences can't help but connect with. This is one of the great plays centering around youth in society. A 2007 - 2009 London revival which transferred to Broadway starred Daniel Radcliffe and the late Richard Grif?ths. You are invited to share in the celebration and excitement of this theatrical experience.

"As a story, it is compelling...Shaffer...creates an exciting spectacle...an exciting, unusual theatrical event."
Michael Billington, The Guardian.

Narrow As The Line

Event Date: 25/09/2013, 07:30 pm

A play set on the Western front during WWI.
Part of the Sydney Fringe Festival

Narrow as the Line is a funny, evocative and ultimately tragic portrayal of the effects of trench warfare on the human psyche.

Set on the Western Front during the height of World War One, the play follows two days in the life of the 3rd Battalion’s officers. It’s cold, it’s wet, and they’re expecting a German offensive at any moment, yet in true Aussie tradition they attempt to make the best of a bad lot: jokes, stories, games, anything to take their minds off the reality of the situation.

But on the front the horror can never be escaped for long and ultimately they are shown to be caught in the perpetual repetition of what is their daily routine. Slowly the routine of war become the every day, until it goes unnoticed.

When even war and death can become a routine for an individual what does that mean for society? As the second act picks up it becomes clear that the characters are now stuck not only in the First World War, but in a never ending repetition of every war through history.

Rachel Collis And Band - Quick Tix!

Event Date: 21/09/2013, 08:00 pm

...perform a quirky, provocative & unpredictable collection of her best tunes.
With ‘the sort of voice that would stop a show’ (Heckler), singer/songwriter Rachel Collis takes to the stage to perform a quirky, provocative, unpredictable, and yet bloody catchy collection of her best original tunes.

Now attacking the piano like a savage, now pleading by it, now subverting it cheekily, Rachel delivers an unforgettable concert with virtuosic support from Michael Galeazzi (bass) and Michael Quigley (drums).

A ‘consummate entertainer’ said Megaphone Oz, ‘sheer genius’, said Australian Stage, declaring the ‘prodigy’ of her songwriting.

Expect original songs you’ll be humming for days.

And expect more: instruments exploited in ways the physicists said were impossible, and genre-mashers of Greek myth and rewritten Shakespeare. Rachel’s songs take simple propositions into dangerous territory. She tames the exotic, and in the next breath turns the familiar upside down. Her songs creep up and say ‘boo!’

Delightfully, it’s infused with humour.

For style, think Tim Minchin, Regina Spektor, or Ben Folds. And none of the above.

As reviewer Lloyd Bradford Syke writes: she’s “as animated as The Bugs Bunny Show and just as funny. Yet, when she turns her hand to a sensitive, searching ballad, she thrusts a knife in your chest that pierces your heart. Not only does she possess a linguistic gift, but a profound talent for storytelling, structure (melody, harmony, rhythm) and orchestration. She's a one-off; an original.”

So, book your tickets and see what all the fuss is about!
