CULT BY RYAN HENRY

Event Date: 01/02/2023, 08:00 pm

Midsumma Festival - Melbourne
Don't stop when you're tired... Stop when you're dead!
You signed on the dotted line, you paid the up-front joining fee and your complimentary microfibre sweat towel has definitely been used by someone else. Congratulations, you’re now on the path to being your best self!

The ripe sweat of men in spaghetti-strap singlets have blurred your senses. That’s not a heart attack, it’s your heart rate perfectly synced to the deafening house music. There’s a personal trainer who's turned into the best friend you didn’t agree to. With their roars of generic encouragement and your determination to be on top, the perfect specimen starts to take form. The question is, can you maintain it?

More than just a story about gaining the strength to crush a watermelon between your thighs, Ryan Henry has created a new Australian work that will reacquaint audiences with self-love. Laugh, cry and maybe vomit if you’ve ever felt personally victimised by an elliptical trainer as cult sprints onto the Melbourne theatre scene.

To put it simply, it’s a spectacle of campness that is sure to release your endorphins.

Midsumma Festival - Melbourne
One dark night on a Dublin sports field, James meets a guy he wishes he hadn’t. On a blurry Dublin sports field, James struggles to remember what is real and what is imaginary, after meeting a guy he wishes he hadn’t.

A lonely university student from rural Ireland, James deflects the events of a dark night, with stories of his astrology obsessed friend, his performatively woke flatmate, and a new overpriced mindfulness app he’s just discovered.

Jonathon Shilling performs in this energetic one-person show confronting gay online hook-up culture, rainbow capitalism and issues of consent with humour, honesty and nuance.

A Southern Fairytale

Event Date: 30/01/2023, 08:30 pm

Midsumma Festival - Melbourne
Based on true events, A Southern Fairytale artfully illuminates the challenges facing a young, gay Christian growing up in the Deep South. As family and friends impose extreme measures to reshape him to fit their ideal, a young man is left isolated, alone and dealing with the very real impacts of conversion therapy, excommunication, and a father who believes that a demon has possessed his son.

Will he ever thrive - or even just simply survive - if he chooses to live as he was born? Is happiness possible when the only faith you have ever known, not to mention everyone you love, demands that you are wrong and living a life of sin?

"There is a depth of wisdom here which needs to be shared with the world." - World Pride New York

NTNNNNN With Osher Gunsberg

Event Date: 27/01/2023, 07:00 pm

Real Stories, Fake News. Night Time News Network Nightly News with Osher Günsberg.
A razor-sharp one-hour satirical news show, whilst the stories are real, the news is made up. Given the 24-hour news cycle means that no two shows are ever the same, one thing will always stay true: sometimes, laughing while the world burns is an appropriate response.

“I realised early on that no network was going to ask me to host my own satirical news show, so I decided to make one anyway,” said Osher. “It’s news like you’ve never seen it before and won’t see again - because this show is never the same twice.

“Between clickbait, culture wars, and climate denial the news has done a lot over the last few years to lose our trust. So, let’s right this ship and sail into our future together with a fake news show on a fake TV news network where all the stories are absolutely real but the news is completely made up.

“The news is depressing enough as it is. You may as well learn what’s going wrong with the world while you have a laugh.”

Osher is joined on stage by a stunning cast of Australia’s best improvisers, including the occasional special guest reporter brave enough to moonlight on their actual network TV contracts.

Having been a guest in Australian living rooms now for nearly two decades, Osher is one of Australia’s most recognisable media personalities. He is currently host of Channel Ten’s The Bachelors and The Masked Singer. His critically acclaimed documentary film with SBS and Lune Media, Osher Günsberg: A Matter of Life and Death, recently won the prestigious Golden Goddess prize at the 2022 Asian Academy Creative Awards.

Having dived into the podcast game early on, Osher’s podcast, Better Than Yesterday, just sailed past 10 million downloads, and another venture, DadPod with Charlie Clausen, was recently nominated for best parenting podcast at the Australian Podcast Awards.
